Anne Arundel County Public Library Foundation, Inc.

The Anne Arundel County Public Library Foundation was incorporated in October, 2006 for the purpose of developing sustainable private support for Anne Arundel County Public Library (AACPL). The Foundation raises funds from private sources for enhanced library services and resources otherwise unsupported by county, state and federal funding. Our vision is to contribute to a vibrant Anne Arundel County where access to knowledge and technology improves the ability of all residents to achieve in a complex society.
AACPL is a public institution funded by the State of Maryland and Anne Arundel County. However, the information explosion, coupled with growing demands for service and rising costs, continue to challenge the library’s ability to deliver essential services. In 2006, a group of public-spirited individuals formed the Anne Arundel County Public Library Foundation as a separate 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization to secure private grants and contributions as a way of enhancing programs otherwise unfunded or underfunded by local and state governments. The Foundation’s mission is to create a thriving community of readers everywhere in the County.
Fifteen branches of the Anne Arundel County Public Library serve the entire county where 43% of the households have at least one library card. In 2014, 180,000 county individuals used their AACPL card and 2.7 million customer visits took place at our branches. In addition, attendance at programs sponsored by the library (i.e., story times, book clubs, STEM classes, English Language classes, performances and movies, GED preparedness classes) had a combined attendance of over 150,000. In 2014, Foundation funds provided the following:
  • 2014 Summer Reading Club support, which is a program that joins together literacy programs with family-focused activities where adults model the importance of reading. This combination encourages and sustains active reading outside the classroom. The AACPL Summer Reading Club is the largest and most successful program in Anne Arundel County.
  • Upgrades to children and teen areas at the multiple locations throughout our 15 branch system. This included new furniture, computers and a more user-friendly design.
  • Complete funding for the placement of “Play and Learn Stations” at 10 libraries, providing computers with specialized software designed for pre-school and early elementary children.
  • Books and magazine material support not funded by the library.
The Anne Arundel County Public Library Foundation’s sole purpose is to enhance and enrich the lives of our community members and support early literacy efforts as well as make available internet and computer access for all, strengthening our community of readers.
